Sarah Clegg Hope, married a doctor named Charles Coates, MD FRCP. She was my 1st cousin 5x removed.
Sarah Hope and Dr. Charles Coates were married on May 6, 1856, in Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire. They lived in a classic Georgian town home at 10 The Circus in Bath, England where they raised their family.
Bath is a town set in the rolling countryside of southwest England, known for its natural hot springs and 18th-century Georgian architecture. The museum at the site of its original Roman Baths includes The Great Bath, statues and a temple; the facility’s Pump Room serves a popular afternoon tea. (source: Wikipedia)
Sarah Clegg Hope Coates was the 2nd Great-grandmother of Camilla Rosemary Shand (aka Camilla Parker Bowles) who married Charles, Prince of Wales. Charles is now known as King Charles III.
In 2005, Camilla Parker Bowles married Prince Charles on April 9 in a civil ceremony in Windsor. She was given the title “Dutchess of Cornwall” and will use the title of “Princess Consort” when Prince Charles becomes king of England.
Knights and the Royal Family
I finally discovered my link to the Royal Family:
Camilla (Queen of England) is my 5th cousin 1x removed. She is a “distant cousin.”
Coronation of Queen Camilla
On May 6, 2023, day of the coronation, the official palace website changed to reflect Queen Camilla’s new title. Rather than queen consort, the former Duchess of Cornwall is now listed as queen. After Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, Camilla, the wife of King Charles III, received the title of queen consort.
Side note: On social media, there are silly posts like “Not my queen” or “Never my queen.” But most people disagree, Camilla was indeed crowned queen in an official ceremony – broadcast live for all to see.
Family of Camilla
For over 20 years, Camilla was married to Andrew Henry Parker Bowles (m. 1973; div. 1995) and they had two beautiful children. She therefore was known as Camilla Parker Bowles.
In 2005, Camilla finally married her longtime romance – Charles, Prince of Wales.
HRH Queen Camilla, ( formerly Duchess of Cornwall) is the president of the National Osteoporosis Society – founded in 1986 in the village Camerton, south west of Bath in Somerset.
Camilla’s two children, Thomas Parker Bowles (1974) and Laura Rose Lopes (1978), are my 6th cousins.
King Charles III is their step-father.
Cousin Laura
Laura Lopes, an Art Curator, has three children: a girl named Eliza (2008), and fraternal twin boys named Gus and Louis (2009). They are my 6th cousins 1x removed.
Eliza Lopes was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton on 29 April 2011.
Cousin Tom
Tom Parker Bowles married Sara Buys in 2005. They have two children. Tom is a British food writer and food critic. He is the author of five cookbooks.
Children: daughter Lola (born 9 October 2007) and son Freddy (born 28 February 2010) – My 6th cousins 1x removed.
Step-Cousins
Prince Harry and Prince William, the two sons of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, are the step-sons of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. So, I guess this makes them my step-cousins. Apparently, Prince Harry has a good relationship with his step-mum.
The Duke of Sussex said he loved the relationship he has with his step-mum and urged the public to feel sorry for her. Camilla married Prince Charles in 2005, but the couple had a relationship before Charles married Diana in 1981. (mirror.co.uk)
“She’s not a wicked stepmother. Look at the position she’s coming into. Don’t feel sorry for me and William, feel sorry for her.
“She’s a wonderful woman and she’s made our father very, very happy which is the most important thing.”
“William and I love her to bits.”
Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex
Camilla was publicly announced as the stepmother of Princes Harry and william in 2004, causing her to receive large volumes of criticism.
Note to Knight Cousins:
If you are my 2nd cousin, then you share the same relationships. Camilla is your 5th cousin 1x removed.
A “distant cousin,” also known as a collateral cousin, is a family member with whom you share a common ancestor, often many generations back.
Hopes of Liverpool, England
The Hope families of Liverpool where known as bankers, boatbuilders and merchants. The family was very successful and gained status in the community. Some families had large estates with servants, and they had the means to retire early.
The HOPE name
Several of my relatives have Hope as a middle name. I am not sure exactly when this trend started, but it indicates the importance of the Hope family name.
The children of Samuel Manning and Mary Louisa Hope started using Hope as a middle name for their children:
• Arthur Hope Manning, 3rd great-uncle
• Charles Hope Manning, 3rd great-uncle
Claud Hope Knight, born in 1871, was the first in the Knight family line to have Hope as a middle name. He was the brother of John Dare Knight, my great-grandfather, who carried on the naming tradition.
• Claud Hope Knight, 2nd great-uncle
• Carmen Sylvia Hope Knight, great-aunt
• Cecil Hope Knight Montiel, great-uncle
• Charles Hope Knight Montiel, great-uncle
• Frederick Hope Knight Montiel, great-uncle
• David Oscar Hope Knight, great-uncle
Hope in the Royal Lineage …
Bruce Middleton Hope Shand, 4th cousin 2x removed
(father of Camilla Rosemary Shand)
When I saw that Camilla’s father had Hope in his name, that gave me a clue that we might be related. So, I looked up the Royal family tree and traced it back to Sarah Clegg Hope (my 1st cousin 5x removed) — which eventually led finding to the connection with the Knight family. (see the long chart at the end)
Hope, Manning and Knight families
How are the Hopes related to the Knights?
The family connection starts in England when Mary Louisa Hope (1820-1897) married Samuel Manning (1821-1881).
Mary and Samuel Manning were the parents of Mary Elizabeth Manning (b1849) who married John Knight (1849-1906), my 2nd great-grandfather.
John and Mary Elizabeth Knight had three children:
• Claud Hope Knight (1871-1926), great-uncle
• John Dare Knight (1878-1953), great-grandfather
• Gwendolyn Mary Knight (1880-1923), great-aunt
John Dare Knight was born in England, then moved to Mexico with his family when he was young. He fell in love with Modesta Montiel, a native of Jaltipan, Veracruz. John and Modesta had 13 children together, and used the Hope middle name for some of the 11 surviving kids.
Family Names and Ancestry Research
In Mexico, parents wisely use both the paternal and maternal family names for the children. The double last names save time in researching the family tree. My grandfather was named John Knight Montiel, but he went by John Montiel Knight or simply John Knight in the USA.
Which John Knight?
There are thousands of John Knights. In my family tree there are about 20 relatives named John Knight. So, it was much easier to find information on John Knight Montiel or John Dare Knight than John Knight.
Knights of Seattle visit Bath, England
On a visit to London, Madelaine, Henry and I took a side trip to Bath, England a few of years ago. It’s a beautiful little historic town, featuring Roman Baths, only a short train ride from London.
We enjoyed walking around The Circus (circle), with a huge tree in the center. It’s a beautiful setting. Unfortunately, we did’t know that our Hope cousins once lived in one of the grand town homes.
Creative Cousin in Bath
Charles Neil Knight, another cousin, was a well-known artist in Bath. He painted a dramatic scene of The Crescent with the grounds covered with snow about 80 years ago.
Hopes of Lancashire
Backstory of the Hope Family
There was a John Hope of Astley in Lancashire who died in 1601 and had a grandson John Hope (1626-1674) of Hopefold, Astley Green in Lancashire. His descendants included a Samuel Hope (1709-1781) whose descendants emigrated to Mexico, USA, P.E.I. Canada and Australia and were merchants/bankers in Liverpool and architects/builders in Manchester.
The Hopes are remembered particularly in Liverpool by the name of Hope Street that includes the Hope & Anchor pub, and Hope Park where can be found the Liverpool Hope University. It is certain that the Hopes were a very wealthy and powerful family in the area.
Origins of the Surname of Hope
The conventional wisdom on the origin of the surname of Hope is that it is derived, certainly in the UK, from the name of a topographical feature – a small enclosed valley. Read more
