Arthur Hope, Esq. of Timaru

While researching the family of Samuel Hope, I found a cousin who left England to start a sheep farm in New Zealand.

So, it turns out that the Hopes have lots of family and sheep down under. Plus, a few artists in the Hope family.

Arthur Hope, Esq. of Timaru – Canterbury, New Zealand was listed in Burke’s Colonial Gentry. Arthur Hope was born at Seaforth House, Lancaster, England in 1853. He immigrated to New Zealand and became a sheep farmer with a large estate of 87,000 acres with 24,000 sheep!

In 1882, he married Frances Emily Tripp of Christchurch, New Zealand.

Timaru is a port city in the southern Canterbury region of New Zealand, located 157 kilometres southwest of Christchurch and about 196 kilometres northeast of Dunedin on the eastern Pacific coast of the South Island.
Sheep in New ZealandSheep farming has been crucial in the development of New Zealand’s economy, and for 130 years was the most important agricultural industry. British navigator James Cook brought sheep to New Zealand in 1773 and 1777.

How many sheep are there in New Zealand?

There used to be 22 sheep for every person in NZ. Now the latest statistics from Beef and Lamb NZ show it has fallen to about six to one, or about 27 million sheep.
(Jan 20, 2017)

New Zealand sheep numbers peaked in 1982, with a total of 70.3 million sheep. In the same year, 3.18 million people lived in New Zealand. This works out to 22 sheep per person. (archive.stats.govt.nz)

Arthur Hope, my 2nd cousin 4x removed, was descended from the Hope family of Liverpool – via the lineage of Samuel Hope.

This entry illustrates that the Hope family scattered about the british colonies – from Australia, to Canada and New Zealand. Hope relatives are also found throughout Mexico and the United States.

Artists in the Family

A great-grandson, Henry Hope, was a farmer and artist. Henry is my 5th cousin 1x removed. Here is some background information from his artist bio:

Henry Hope was born and raised in rural South Canterbury and brought up on a farm in the South Island foothills. He studied graphic design in Christchurch and then went on to study fine art at the Byam Shaw School of Art, London. Upon returning to New Zealand in the early 1980’s he took up farming for a time but was always painting in his spare time.

Henry began painting landscapes full time in the late 1980’s always in oils on canvas or board. In 1990 he won the Birkenhead Art Award at the Auckland Society of Arts. In the 1990’s several of Henry’s paintings were featured by the Giesen brothers on their wine labels.

Henry’s main artistic influences have been, locally: his grandmother Esther Hope the well known water colorist, Austen Deans and Sydney Thompson.
